When his sons reach adulthood, they take up their father's mantle and attempt to make their own mark on the world. Ragnar's plans of conquest and discovery bring him into a variety of deadly conflicts and introduce him to new cultures that challenge the foundations of his society. Instead he looks west, dreaming of the riches and glory that await anyone brave enough to sail the open sea. Ragnar ( Travis Fimmel) is presented as an ambitious man of humble origins who is dissatisfied with the established Norse practices of tending poor homesteads and raiding bankrupt villages to the east. Much like the Icelandic sagas from which it is adapted, Vikings is an exploration of human conflicts set against the backdrop of a grim, violent, yet proud society. The show adapts the semi-legendary sagas of Ragnar Lodbrok and His Sons. Gregg notched two of his wins against defending league champion Pittsburgh, but his club lost twice to eventual AFC Central champ Cleveland, which had fired him as head coach after the 1977 campaign. Gregg's deciding moment came when he was accidently knocked to the ground by an errant Munoz forearm while working Munoz out in a supposedly "light-contact" drill on a scouting trip. Munoz, who 18 years later would be a first-ballot Hall-of-Fame inductee, having played his entire career with Cincinnati, was enthusiastically endorsed by Gregg as Cincinnati's top choice. The first building block in that plan was the drafting of Southern California OT Anthony Munoz with the No. Forrest Gregg managed only a 6-10 record in his first season as head coach, but he was laying the groundwork for a trip to the Super Bowl the following year.
